Porterville, CA has lots of great places to visit for a trip out, and with your spacious and comfortable Chevrolet Blazer, there’s room for the whole family! Whether you’re interested in historic monuments, wide-open spaces, or fun hiking trails, there’s plenty of choices. In fact, there are enough day trips nearby to keep you busy all weekend!

1. Lake Success

Any trip to Lake success is sure to be a successful day out! This lake is certainly a scenic setting for your day out, with the dramatic heights of the Sierra Nevada Mountains rising over the placid water. It’s a great spot for fishing, boating, hiking, biking or just relaxing by the water. All types of watercrafts are allowed on the lake, and during the summer the lake is often buzzing with jet skis, kayaks and sailboats.

The large nature reserve nearby is an excellent spot for birdwatching and is widely considered to be one of the best in Tulare County. Bald eagles soar majestically over the lake, grebes and mallards shelter near the shoreline, and herons strut through the wetlands that surround the lake. There’s plenty to see on land too; including blacktail deer, quails and jackrabbits.

2.  Trail of 100 Giants

This fantastically named hiking trail runs through one of the best groves of giant sequoias in the area. It’s often much quieter than some of the better-known groves, and if you come in the early morning, you might well have the grove to yourself. Interpretive signage throughout the trail provides fascinating information on the area and on the trees themselves. Part of the trail may still be blocked by fallen trees, but it’s easy to get around them.

3. Zalud House Museum

Zalud House was built in 1891 and is one of the few houses in the area not to have undergone any substantial refurbishment since then, allowing visitors to step back in time and view a nostalgic glimpse of the past. The house is furnished entirely with the possessions of the original owners, the Zalud family, who lived in the house until it was given to the city of Porterville in 1970.

A guided tour takes you through the museum, giving you fascinating insights into life in the house as it was. A beautiful rose garden provides a lovely spot to stop and rest on your way around. Don’t miss the chair in which a family member, William Brookes, was murdered – you can still see the bullet holes!

4. Tabitha Max Blueberry Farm

A great place to come and pick your own berries! As well as being a working commercial farm, it’s also possible to pick your own berries fresh from the bushes. The farm is totally organic, with no pesticides of any sort. It’s a great day out that the kids will love!
